- W4248986789 abstract "Henry Tilney’s success in capturing Catherine’s heart fairly immediately is not difficult to account for. She is young and naive and moving in fashionable circles for the first time; he is nice-looking, and has head and spirits enough to interest. But the promptitude of the favourable impression he makes is also due to a gentlemanlike air and the possession of address (a social manner calculated to please). The term manners can also be used of this latter quantity — though it can be misleading, as the word in the plural today refers to a much more restricted aspect of one’s social deportment than it does in the singular. When Jane Austen comments on manners, she is referring not necessarily to the presence or absence of punctilious civility, but to whether or not someone’s general manner is likely to recommend him or her (though, if it is, some degree of courtesy often enters into the matter). When Elizabeth Bennet says to Jane, “And so, you like this man’s sisters too, do you? Their manners are not equal to his” (PP 15), she does not mean that Bingley’s sisters are less observant of common politenesses than he. She means that their manner, somewhat haughty and reserved, is less calculated to please than Bingley’s good-natured ease, which constitutes the happy facility of address possessed by this most likeable of Jane Austen’s likeable young men." @default.
