- W4249088669 abstract "Wood protection and preservation enhances forest and environmental sustainability. Biological agents are the major causes of wood deterioration. Fire is the most catastrophic and economically important form of nonbiological deterioration. The fungi that degrade wood are classified as decay, soft-rot, stain, or mold fungi according to the type of degradation they cause. Unlike fungi, bacteria can survive and thrive in relatively anoxic or completely anerobic environments, thus high moisture levels even up to saturation are not an adequate defense. Wood used in contact with sea or brackish water is subject to damage by marine borers. A surface of wood exposed to outdoor conditions without the protection of paint or other finishes is subject to surface roughening and degradation broadly termed weathering. The act of treating with any type of preservative is, in essence, an attempt to somewhat toxify or poison the wood. The environmental impact and safety of preservatives and treated wood are critical concerns." @default.
