- W4249091467 abstract "Copepods (suborder: Copepoda) are small crustaceans that have tubular, segmented bodies and segmented appendages used for swimming and feeding. Although copepods dominate the invertebrate fauna of many inland waters, their evolutionary origin is marine. They play a central role in aquatic food webs and can be found at high densities in any watery habitat, including moist soils and subterranean environments. Most species are omnivorous, feeding on bacteria, protozoa, algae, and a variety of microinvertebrates; many other species are cannibalistic. The high energy content of copepods makes them an excellent food for fish and other organisms. During development, copepods pass through six naupliar stages and six copepodid stages, the last of which is the adult. Adults are sexually dimorphic; the females are generally larger than the males. Reproduction is sexual, and most species have resting stages that permit survival during adverse environmental conditions. Copepods play a variety of important roles in infectious diseases of humans and other organisms. They are hosts of flukes, nematodes, and tapeworms, and vectors of seriously debilitating diseases such as Cholera. Copepods may also serve as valuable biological control agents for disease-transmitting mosquitoes. These wide and varied roles of copepods make them a key component of inland water ecosystems." @default.
