- W4249235145 abstract "Ethanol demand is continuously increasing worldwide due to industrialization and rapid population growth. Because food and fuel production are highly interconnected, use of only first-generation plus second-generation biofuels is not enough to meet the inclusive bioethanol production demand. As a result of this, algal biofuels have emerged as a probable source of bioethanol production at low cost, which are ideal as renewable sources of energy. Algal cells being rich in carbohydrates such as starch will provide low-cost bioethanol on fermentation. Moreover, they are widely distributed in nature. Also, it has been found that stable expression of cellulases/hemicellulases from genetically modified stains of algae (namely Dunaliella and Chlamydomonas) can prove to be a boon to cellulose-based industries because it could reduce the cost of bioethanol production commercially. This chapter illustrates the potential of algae as a substrate for cellulase enzyme production, which in turn can be used for various commercial purposes specifically in the production of low-cost biofuels." @default.
