Easyjet will still fly and Eurostar will still run, as will our ripe Camemberts – albeit in the latter case at least more pricily than heretofore. And ‘our’ constituency would appear to have been in favour of Remain, with up to 75 per cent of students voting that way. But with EU funding for research, apprenticeships and training now seemingly dead in the water and study at European universities likely to prove significantly more costly, the HE sector will find it very difficult to avoid becoming in multiple respects more parochial. In the narrower, or at least more specific, optic of French Studies the outlook cannot but be grim. FSB has been, at least implicitly, politically neutral, but recent seismic events surely render such a stance unhelpfully bloodless if not downright fatuous. The relationship of these islands to Europe, and hence inevitably to France, has been dealt appalling damage, and the French Studies community cannot hide behind benign professional neutrality if it is to retain any shred of cultural – some might even say ethical – credibility. The form our response, or better responses given that we have long been a coalition of disciplines, might take needs to be discussed in a multiplicity of fora in the period ahead. The current state of aftershock is probably not the best place to start such a discussion, but the present writer fervently hopes that professional associations and learned societies in these islands will do all that is in their power to affirm the continuing importance of the study of continental European languages and cultures in a post-Brexit UK. As I write this, the SFS conference in Glasgow – non-Brexit territory if ever there were – is due to begin in a few days. I shall try to do what I can to ensure that yesterday’s calamity is not merely fodder for bar conversations, but the starting-point for a committed approach from our sector of the profession.
