- W4249561315 abstract "Reviewed by: The Other Side of Perfect by Mariko Turk Deborah Stevenson, Editor Turk, Mariko The Other Side of Perfect. Little, 2021 [336p] Trade ed. ISBN 9780316703406 $17.99 E-book ed. ISBN 9780316703420 $9.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R* Gr. 8-10 Alina’s life shatters along with her leg after a tiny ballet misstep means she’ll never be on pointe again. Now, instead of prepping along with her best friend for the American Ballet Theatre summer intensive, she’s attending regular school as a junior and—horrors!—taking part in the school musical. She’s still grieving ballet so hard she can’t even talk about it, but there are possibilities of warmth in her friendship with theater kid Margot (“I like musicals because they’re loud and weird. And I’m loud and weird”) and her gang and maybe more than friendship with handsome Jude. Turk brings intelligence and dimension (and, judging by the author’s bio, personal experience) to this familiar story of the teenaged dancer who hits a diversion, with a cast where everybody, from Alina’s budding-choreographer younger sister to a pair of giggling sophomores to the school’s cool eternal princess of musicals, gets real dimension. Alina’s grief is unusually realistic in both its rawness and persistence, and the book adds an interrogation of ballet’s racist inclinations (Alina is half-Japanese, her best friend is Black, and they’re both sidelined year after year) without invalidating what Alina has lost; glimpses of her talent as she dances and choreographs for Singin’ in the Rain add heft to that loss. Musical lovers will relish watching a newbie discover the wonders of their milieu, and all readers will appreciate Alina’s dawning realization that there’s a place for her in a world beyond ballet.
