- W4249753634 abstract "This chapter will focus on the histological study of bone tissue of archaeological origin, a topic that inevitably extends into the world of palaeoanthropology. Histological research of archaeologically derived bone tissue is part of a methodological continuum that includes various tissues other than bone (such as teeth and desiccated soft tissue) and applications that go beyond but are complementary to histomorphological characterization (such as microradiography and micro-computed tomography). The focus here will be on transmitted light microscopy as applied to bone. Given its long history and its relatively simple laboratory requirements, this approach holds considerable promise to become a normal part of analytical protocols. Guides regarding the methods of sample preparation for transmitted light microscopy are readily available (Robling and Stout 2008; Schultz 1997a, 1997b; Turner-Walker and Mays 2008; Ubelaker 1989). There is considerable variation in methodological approaches, so a newcomer to this field should read broadly. Nomenclature and symbols for many histomorphological structures are standardized and researchers are urged to follow established terminology for histomorphometry whenever possible (cf. Parfitt et al. 1987)." @default.
