- W4249867609 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the development, analysis, and simulations of approximate nonlinear filters. It critically assesses the state-of-the-art in nonlinear filtering and suggests several areas for future research. The extended Kalman filter has been successfully applied to numerous nonlinear filtering problems. If nonlinearities are significant, however, filter performance can be substantially improved by local iteration or inclusion of second-order effects. The modified Gaussian second-order filter has been applied in several problems with considerable success. The improvement in performance realized with the modified Gaussian second-order filter can be particularly significant in real-time applications where decisions must be made on the basis of the estimate and estimation error statistics. It is of course possible to develop higher-order approximations and to consider higher-order moments and even skewness (third moments) for approximations. The crucial defect in these approximations is that, the global properties of a function (its average) are replaced by local properties (its derivatives). If the first-order approximation is completely inadequate, then finite higher-order approximation will tend to be useless as well." @default.
