- W4250000726 abstract "One of the ways of determining whether a particular compound has a role in synaptic transmission is to study the way in which isolated nerve endings accumulate its radiolabelled congener and subsequently release it under resting or stimulated conditions. In the past, this strategy has been used to examine the uptake and release of radiolabeled m-tyramine (mTA), p-tyramine (pTA), and tryptamine (T) (Dyck, 1984; Baker and Dyck, 1986). Most previous studies of the uptake and release of labelled PE and T, in general, have found that these two amines are poorly taken up, poorly retained and that they are released mainly by diffusion rather than by a depolarizing stimulus. In contrast, the more polar amines, mTA and pTA, are actively accumulated, stored and released by depolarizing stimuli in a calcium-dependent manner; i.e., labelled mTA and pTA behave in a manner consistent with the appellation, neurotransmitter. Because radiolabeled congeners do not necessarily give an accurate reflection of the release of endogenous neurochemicals, recent studies attempt to measure basal or stimulated release of endogenous compounds." @default.
