- W4250073889 abstract "Renewable energy technologies, such as photochemical water splitting for hydrogen fuel generation, fuel cells for direct conversion from fuels to electricity, and batteries for energy storage, are promising for future energy sources, including portable power sources, engines, and power plants. At the heart of these renewable energy technologies, there are three key chemical reactions: the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells and metal-air batteries; the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting and the charge process of metal-air batteries; and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting. This chapter discusses the design principles, catalytic activities, and processes of biological and synthetic catalysts. Examples are given of how to mimic nature to create catalytic materials for water splitting, fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and artificial photosynthesis. Natural photosynthesis is a complex chemical process involving many subreactions that need catalysts. In this process, plants use sunlight as the energy source to carry out plant reactions." @default.
