- W4250251926 abstract "Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are toxins exclusively biosynthesized by plants. They are typical plant secondary metabolites against herbivores. It has been estimated that about 6000 plant species worldwide, representing 3% to 5% of all flowering plants, may contain PAs. Analyzing PAs can be performed by a broad toolbox of methods depending on the objective of the analysis. In food and feed samples, PAs are contaminants without any maximum residue limit regulation in the European Union. Because of their high toxicity, analytical methods must be sensitive and specific. Chromatographic techniques coupled with mass spectrometry are the methods of choice, but several challenges have to be considered. In this manuscript challenges like missing reference substances for quantification, the differences between several chromatographic techniques or different detection techniques are described." @default.
