- W4250320639 abstract "Reviewed by: A Baby Like You by Catherine Thimmesh Elizabeth Bush Thimmesh, Catherine A Baby Like You. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2019 [48p] illus. with photographs Trade ed. ISBN 978-1-328-55312-6 $14.99 E-book ed. ISBN 978-0-358-16874-4 $9.99 Reviewed from galleys R 1-3 yrs In this enticing book on early child development, the reader-aloud gently teases the young listener with accounts of how a typical baby gets on with the business of life: [End Page 280] Each new day, in different ways, a baby like you is born into the world … pushed up up up to the water's surface for a gulp of fresh air. At least that's how it works for a baby hippo, pictured with its mother in a glorious photograph. In the case of a pictured baby giraffe, it's dropped down down down to the ground. An ensuing spread then arrives at the human event: But you were not pushed up or dropped down… . Instead, you slid and you wiggled your way into the world—into your mama's waiting arms. More animal/human baby comparisons follow this pattern, and most seasoned or repeat listeners will catch the joke and then insist on hearing the slightly smaller print text that offers a tidbit of additional information. There is a touch of idealization, but for cozy laptime sharing of simple information, engrossing photographs, and mutual giggles, this could be the perfect family pick.
