- W4250411778 abstract "In March, 2016, Sikhosiphi “Bazooka” Rhadebe, who had been protesting against a titanium mine in the Xolobeni region of South Africa, received eight shots to the head in his home. Three years later, the perpetrators have not been identified. Rhadebe's death was in no way an isolated incident, as was reported in a joint report published April 16 by the Centre for Environmental Rights, groundWork, Earthjustice, and Human Rights Watch, which finds that those who dare protest against mining activities in South Africa face harassment, intimidation, or violence. This is not only true in South Africa. For instance, on April 22, it was reported that the fire was opened on protesters demanding the dismantlement of a gold mine in Sudan, which had killed eight when it collapsed. The mining industry has had a long and terrible history. Health risks due to exposure to toxic materials, dust, toxic gases and substances, explosives, risks of mine collapse, or more indirect effects, such as increased exposure to vector-borne diseases, contamination of water, soil, and air with heavy metals, or loss of arable and ancestral land, remain pervasive in the industry today. Nevertheless, awareness of and regulation against the negative health, social, and environmental effects of mining have been growing since the mid-20th century. In South Africa, for example, courts have recently held that, without meaningful community consultation, permission, and appropriate financial arrangements benefiting that community, a mining company cannot lawfully exploit that land, and extensive legislation has been put in place regarding mining safety and compensation for injuries. The authorities are known to react strongly when there is a safety violation—sometimes shutting down mines entirely, causing massive financial loss. 21st century mining is keen to present a different face, one that takes corporate responsibility, sustainable development goals, and health and safety assessments seriously. However, Human Rights Watch draws the portrait of an industry that is still built at the expense of local communities' rights. That people need to protest to have their rights respected is saddening, but that their lives are endangered while doing so is deplorable. Industrial gains cannot come at that cost." @default.
