- W4250466764 abstract "This chapter reviews the rationale for the use of radiation therapy and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-based chemotherapy in the treatment of colon cancer. Prospective randomized trials have established the value of adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with resected high-risk colon cancer. In order to reduce the high incidence of hepatic metastases and peritoneal failures developing in patients with advanced stage colon cancer, there have been clinical investigations of the efficacy of adjuvant hepatic irradiation as well as whole-abdomen radiation therapy. The xeloda in adjuvant colon cancer therapy (X-ACT) study sought to compare the efficacy and safety of capecitabine versus bolus 5-FU/leucovorin as adjuvant therapy for stage III colon cancer. Thus, the X-ACT study suggested that capecitabine offered at least equivalent clinical benefit, with a potentially improved toxicity profile, and was a possibly more cost-effective therapeutic option for patients with stage III colon cancer in the adjuvant setting." @default.
