- W4250677409 abstract "This chapter discusses the trypanosomes. It is suggested that trypanosomes of the subgenus Trypanozoon could change immunologically during the course of an infection and thus survive the onslaught of their host's antibodies. The chapter discusses the epidemiology of human African trypanosomiasis and its causative organisms, Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense. The two subspecies differ greatly in their relationships with their mammalian hosts, including humans, and the differences are vitally important in attempting to define suitable control measures for the two infections. The chapter also describes apoptosis or programmed cell death, and its occurrence in both parasites and the cells of their hosts. The interactions between these two events may profoundly affect the pathogenesis of a parasitic infection. The effect of these interactions is discussed in relation to American trypanosomiasis, schistosomiasis, malaria, toxoplasmosis, and leishmaniasis. It is suggested that future developments may permit the manipulation of host cell apoptosis in ways that benefit the host itself." @default.
