- W4250947436 abstract "It is shown that the observed arrival of low-rigidity solar cosmic rays at latitudes much below those predicted by the Störmer theory for the dipole field of the earth cannot be explained, either by a physically plausible ring current or by any experimentally established limitation of the radial extent of the magnetosphere, if either perturbation is acting alone. It is then demonstrated by an approximate theoretical treatment that the observed reductions of geomagnetic cutoffs can be explained plausibly and quantitatively as due to the combined effects of these two perturbations. The present study has been limited to the noon meridian, but it is believed that the essential elements of the approximate theory will survive in a more complete treatment of the problem." @default.
