- W4251458177 abstract "This chapter argues that the Henry VI plays located the problems faced by the England of Henry VI not simply in an unsettled or contestable succession. Rather, they identified a combination of other factors and forces, which, taken together, threatened to render a currently unsettled and potentially contested succession a source of unappeasable political and moral crisis. Accordingly, these plays treat, in some detail, issues of succession: that is to say, both de jure questions of what constituted a legitimate claim and of how such claims might be adjudicated, and also de facto issues about how a dynastic claim could be turned into practical legitimacy; that is to say, established as the basis of a stable, functioning regime whose rule was accepted more or less by all, as, if not fully legitimate, then at least as an established fact." @default.
