- W4251808558 abstract "Reviewed by: Children’s Literature: A Reader’s History from Aesop to Harry Potter Deborah Stevenson Lerer, Seth. Children’s Literature: A Reader’s History from Aesop to Harry Potter. University of Chicago, 2008 396p. illus. with photographs ISBN 0-978-022647300-0 $30.00 The title and subtitle notwithstanding, this isn’t so much an unbroken chronicle of the literature as a series of discrete scholarly examinations into specific genres and the implications of their dominance in particular eras, with an emphasis, once past the opening chapter, on English and American texts. Lerer begins with classical didactic works in Greek and Latin, often overlooked in histories of the literature, and goes on to discuss subjects from Aesop and medieval literature to the Edwardians and twentieth-century developments. The focus is on children’s literature in a larger context—Lerer, a professor of English and comparative lit with an inclination toward philology, more often explores adult literature, and there’s a considerable amount of space here devoted to adult texts that reflect his thematic focus in addition to selected children’s texts. Though investigations of individual texts are deep, the broader assessments tends toward sweeping judgments that could use support, and material focusing on more recent eras covers much of the same ground as previous scholarship on topics such as Robinsonades, adventure fiction, and metatextuality. There’s still a goodly amount of useful analysis, though, especially in the underserved earlier eras, and in the (timely) chapter focusing on the way Darwin’s evolutionary theories have shaped both children’s literature and responses to it. While this isn’t a key critical work, those interested in expanding their view of historical contexts for literature will find aspects of it enlightening. Images from literature or relevant to it appear in black and white throughout; endnotes and an index are included.
