- W4251831711 abstract "Photoaging of the skin results from chronic exposure to solar ultraviolet irradiation. Both UVA and UVB contribute to premature skin aging which is characterized by wrinkles, pigmentary changes, loss of skin tone and elasticity, and textural changes. Histologically, photoaged skin displays alterations in elastin tissue, epidermal thinning and disorganization of the dermal connective tissue. Photoaging mechanisms include formation of free radicals – which lead to accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS mediate deleterious post-translational effects on aging skin through direct chemical modifications to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), cell lipids, deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA), and dermal matrix proteins, including collagens. Other mechanisms of photoaging include UV-induced inhibition of collagen formation, increased collagen degradation, elastosis due to induction of cathepsins, and recent discovery of progerin induction in response to UVA. Data is ever evolving with respect to players involved in the photoaging process, as well as to the role genetics may play in extrinsic aging. Additionally, methods of prevention and therapeutics for the stigmata of photoaging are actively being investigated and developed." @default.
