- W4251856667 abstract "Freud’s pessimism over change, so obvious in his views on the future of society, extends to his account of the prospects for cure of individual distress. His formulation of the aims of therapy does not include the loss of all pain; instead, it focuses on the necessity of living with one’s ailments. In one of his earliest psychoanalytic works, Freud describes a challenge from an imaginary patient: Why, you tell me yourself that my illness is probably connected with my circumstances and the events of my life. You cannot alter these in any way. How do you propose to help me then? (Breuer and Freud, 1895, p. 393) Freud’s reply confronts all movements arguing for the possibilities of salvation — religious, political and therapeutic: No doubt fate would find it easier than I do to relieve you of your illness. But you will be able to convince yourself that much will be gained if we succeed in transforming your hysterical misery into common unhappiness. (ibid.) Such a formulation not only supplies a rebuff to those who attempt to evaluate psychoanalysis on the narrow grounds of its success at removing symptoms, but it also contains a subtle political formulation: that the‘common unhappiness’ of normal living is different only in degree from‘hysterical misery’, and that both are connected with the‘circumstances and events’ of life." @default.
