- W4251867024 abstract "Archaeological sciences are the many subdisciplines that involve the application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematical methods in archaeology. Most frequently defined by their methods rather than by specific aims or study areas, archaeological sciences cover the engagement of physics, chemistry, biology, genetics, computing, or medicine, among other disciplines, to the study of both organic and inorganic archaeological remains, as well as associated sediments or contextual information such as their date or spatial location. Other relevant terms such as scientific archaeology, archaeometry, or heritage science each have specific connotations that make them different, although with fluid boundaries among all. Initial attempts at integrating archaeology and natural sciences were made difficult primarily by problems of communication among specialists. In the last two decades, the training of researchers across disciplines has led to a truly interdisciplinary generation of scholars who can plan and lead archaeological science projects much more fruitfully and effectively. As a result, modern archaeology can no longer be conceived without science, although some challenges remain to ensure sustainability, access to resources, and the input of archaeological knowledge into scientific practice." @default.
