- W4251941871 abstract "The role of print censorship has often been overlooked in the Victorian period. Nevertheless, both legal and extra‐legal forms of censorship for obscene libel and the debates to which they gave rise offer important insights into the ways in which the Victorians defined literature and obscenity, freedom of expression, and the perceived social efficacy of print. Press and stage censorship also contribute to the period's regulatory mechanisms. Legal forms of Victorian print censorship include laws related to the seizure of obscene materials, legal definitions of obscenity, and trials for allegedly obscene printed matter. Extra‐legal forms of censorship include self‐censorship, family‐censorship, and the roles performed by vice societies, libraries, and publishers. The law throughout the period targeted those who circulated or sold material perceived to be obscene. Both the law defining obscenity (articulated in 1868) and the attitudes and debates expressed in the context of print censorship had a lasting impact on print regulation into the twentieth century." @default.
