- W4252068106 abstract "Although male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) had traditionally been attributed to benign prostatic hyperplasia, bladder dysfunction and comorbidities have also been considered possible causes of LUTS. We have reported that serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are greater in patients with overactive bladder (OAB) and interstitial cystitis. 1 Chung S.D. Liu H.T. Lin H. et al. Elevation of serum C-reactive protein in patients with OAB and IC/BPS implies chronic inflammation in the urinary bladder. Neurourol Urodyn. 2011; 30: 417-420 Crossref PubMed Scopus (77) Google Scholar A recent population-based study also showed a consistent association of increased serum CRP levels with OAB in both men and women. 2 Kupelian V, Rosen RC, Roehrborn CG, et al. Association of overactive bladder and C-reactive protein levels. Results from the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey. BJU Int. In press. Google Scholar The elevated serum CRP level in male LUTS might reflect not only chronic inflammation in the prostate, but also chronic inflammation in the urinary bladder. Re: Liao et al.: Serum C-reactive Protein Levels are Associated With Residual Urgency Symptoms in Patients With Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia After Medical Treatment. (Urology 2011;78:1373-1379)UrologyVol. 79Issue 5PreviewWe congratulate the authors for this innovative article where they have documented elevated serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in men with the residual symptom of urgency after receiving medical therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia. The authors hypothesize that chronic inflammation (probably in the prostate) may have a role in residual urgency. CRP is excreted in the urine1 and its level has also been measured in other body fluids.2,3 Can chronic inflammation of the urinary tract lead to high levels of CRP in the urine? If so, then we feel that urinary CRP rather than serum CRP would have been more useful. Full-Text PDF" @default.
