- W4252130168 abstract "In 1940, the American people abandoned isolationism. While at the outset of that year polls still showed that staying out of war (World War II) was seen as the best course for the United States, by the end of 1940 that had changed to helping England win even at the risk of America getting into the war. FDR himself was the most prominent advocate of that policy. He took advantage of the new medium of radio to broadcast his views in “fireside chats,” a form of communication he himself invented, while also enlisting the services of a pollster, Hadley Cantril. FDR’s fireside chats as well as other speeches diminished the appeal of isolationism while building support for his interventionist policies. It was a masterful display of opinion leadership, using new media." @default.
