This chapter explores some of the theoretical contributions of the study of language in minority ethnic communities to the field of sociolinguistics. It discusses variation and change, focusing on communities within the USA, where a majority studies have been done. The chapter provides illustrative examples of some significant works that have been produced on language and ethnicity. Decades of studying language variation and change in minority ethnic groups has enabled linguists to contribute to overturning dangerous language ideologies, both in the larger society and local communities. Sociolinguistic research suggests that there is a wide range of variation in the possible effects of interethnic contact. One crucial direction for future research is the study of sound change within ethnic minority communities." @default.
