- W4252275356 abstract "Reviewed by: The Splendor Falls Deborah Stevenson Clement-Moore, Rosemary. The Splendor Falls. Delacorte, 2009 [528p]. Library ed. ISBN 978-0-385-90635-7 $20.99 Trade ed. ISBN 978-0-385-73690-9 $17.99 After a mid-performance fall leaves both Sylvie’s leg and her burgeoning ballet career shattered, she’s shipped off by her newly remarried mother to relatives in [End Page 61] Alabama for recuperation and a change of scene. The seventeen-year-old (accompanied everywhere by her faithful Chihuahua, Gigi) is startled to find herself at the old family mansion she never knew about, which is being turned into a hotel by her cousin Paula, and which also houses a visiting anthropologist and his handsome young son, Rhys. There Sylvie begins to realize that what she thought were delusional episodes are actually glimpses of ghosts, and she’s smack in the middle of the rehashing of ghostly Civil War–era family turmoil; she also discovers that there are current attempts to revive the magical power of the area, and that she’s central to that plan. Author of Prom Dates from Hell (BCCB 7/07) and its sequels, Clement-Moore knows her supernatural romance elements: two hunky guys interested in our heroine, a mysterious historical tragedy, a variety of frightening ghostly apparitions, and contemporary danger and ambition. Unfortunately, the book also has an initially unsympathetic heroine (Sylvie is petulant and entitled), overly vague magical forces, and a glacial pace for the first two-thirds of its considerable length. Patient readers and determined haunt fans may find sufficient sustenance in the atmosphere and hints of mayhem to come, and they’ll be rewarded by the unfolding of the mystery and a nicely hair-raising rising of the spooks (as well, of course, as tender romance between Sylvie and Rhys). Readers looking for more direct ghostly satisfaction will prefer Saundra Mitchell’s Shadowed Summer (BCCB 2/09), but this may still suit those who can’t get enough of spectral and romantic disturbance.
