- W4252314802 abstract "In humans and animals, periodontal disease is usually characterized by cyclic episodes of active inflammatory disease and remission that lead to progressive loss of attachment between the affected tooth and the supporting periodontium. In this chapter, the authors provide a discussion on the inflammatory lesions of the oral mucosa such as gingivitis, periodontitis, feline chronic gingivo stomatitis, virus-associated stomatitis in cats, canine stomatitis, immune-mediated dermatoses, mucosal drug reactions, mucocutaneous pyoderma, eosinophilic stomatitis, granulomatous stomatitis, and oral candidiasis. They also discuss the inflammatory lesions of the jaws. Inflammation of the jaws is a relatively common lesion in veterinary species. Four overlapping syndromes of jaw inflammation are recognized in veterinary species – periodontal osteomyelitis, lumpy jaw of ruminant species (actino-mycosis), mandibulofacial/maxillofacial abscesses of mice, and periostitis ossificans. Mandibular or maxillary osteomyelitis can resolve spontaneously but generally requires appropriate antimicrobial and/or surgical treatment." @default.
