- W4252362723 abstract "Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is frequently sown in mixtures with grasses. Mixtures of species and varieties have been utilized because environmental conditions could not be accurately predicted. Several techniques have been developed to introduce and control interspecific competition in alfalfa-grass mixtures. In addition to below-ground competitive effects such as competition for moisture and nutrients, alfalfa and grass grown in combination have a beneficial effect on the environment for growth, e.g., nitrogen may be made available by the alfalfa component. Time of seeding of an alfalfa-grass mixture markedly influences the emergence and seedling growth of individual species. Alfalfa and grasses respond differently to various management practices because they differ markedly both morphologically and physiologically. Frequent cutting of alfalfa-grass mixtures in Indiana removed the apices of smooth bromegrass and timothy before the basal buds were fully developed and capable of growth." @default.
