- W4252413538 abstract "The Vagococcus is a relatively recently recognized genus of Gram-positive, catalase-negative cocci. Eight species have been described to date: Vagococcus fluvialis (in 1989) and Vagococcus salmoninarum (in 1990) were the first, followed by Vagococcus lutrae (1999), Vagococcus fessus (2000), Vagococcus carniphilus (2004), Vagococcus elongatus (2007), Vagococcus penaei (2009), and Vagococcus acidifermentans (2011). The type species is V. fluvialis. Although vagococci are phylogenetically distinct, it is difficult to distinguish these microorganisms from other lactic acid bacteria by phenotypic criteria, and their differentiation from some enterococcal species based only on physiological characteristics is particularly problematic. Since they resemble other better-known clinical isolates, especially the enterococci, they may have been misidentified or overlooked in clinical laboratories, which may have contributed to the paucity of reports concerning their significance as a cause of infections in animals and humans. The isolation of V. salmoninarum from diseased fish, V. lutrae and V. fessus from different diseased aquatic mammals, and V. fluvialis from animals and humans with a variety of infections calls for the attention to these microorganisms as emerging pathogens and to the possibility of several animals, including animals raised for human consumption, serving as sources of infection. As more attention and refined procedures are incorporated into the isolation and characterization schemes of the Gram-positive, catalase-negative cocci, proper identification of the vagococci may lead to more information about the significance of these bacteria, their roles in animal and human diseases, and their potential economic impact in food industry." @default.
