Mozambique is one of the young countries in Africa born of a 10-year people's war against Portuguese colonial fascism. The Constitution of the People's Republic of Mozambique contains some provisions: (1) In the People's Republic of Mozambique, work and education constitute rights and duties of every citizen; and (2) The People's Republic of Mozambique undertakes an energetic fight against illiteracy and obscurantism, and promotes the development of national culture and personality. Up to the time of the Portuguese colonialist invasion, Mozambique was essentially dominated, as were various African countries in the 16th century, by a feudal regime. A consciousness of national unity led to the organization, on June 25, 1962, of a resistance movement through the formation of a vanguard that embodied the aspirations of the people—the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO). Mozambique is an essentially rural country in its social composition, a country that depends essentially on agriculture. Despite this, it is a country in which agricultural resources, land, and water are underutilized." @default.
