- W4252876177 abstract "Abstract Durometry is a hardness measurement for materials such as rubber and plastic. The deformation caused by indentation into a solid is governed by linear elastic mechanics, and this article relates the Young's modulus to standardized hardness scales. We adimensionalized these indentation mechanics, and uncovered a normalized Young's modulus, ϒ, and the dimensionless hardness, . We then discovered a new dimensionless indentor stiffness which we call mechanical indentability, Mi, which can be used for classifying hardness scales. Our analysis allows practitioners to determine the Young's modulus from measured hardness. Further, our results allow conversion between different hardness scales.
