- W4252967889 abstract "Physical characteristics of athletes in a specific sport may reflect the physiological, functional and biomechanical requirements of the sport, as well as modifications associated with training. PURPOSE The purpose was to compare physical and functional characteristics of female collegiate rowers from two perspectives, years of collegiate rowing experience and level. METHODS Participants were 90 members (18.1–23.4 years) of three NCAA Division I university rowing teams in 2003–2004. Years of collegiate rowing experience were as follows: rowers in their first (n = 39), second (n = 25), third (n = 15) or fourth year (n = 11). Level was designated novice (n = 34) or varsity (n = 56) as determined by the coaches. Stature, sitting height, weight, arm span, skeletal breadths, limb circumferences, and skinfolds were measured. The sitting height/height and arm span/height ratios, leg length, body composition, and Heath-Carter anthropometric somatotypes were derived. Performance measures included: sit-and-reach (flexibility), vertical jump (power), and a 2K timed row on an ergometer. Each participant was queried about years of experience prior to college rowing. MANOVA (P 0.05) with Wilks's lambda as the test statistic was used to evaluate differences by years of collegiate rowing experience and level. Comparisons were made using Hotelling's T2 with a Bonferroni adjusted alpha level to determine which components contributed to significant differences. RESULTS Varsity and novice rowers differed significantly in years of experience prior to college, endomorphy, vertical jump, and 2K time (P < 0.05). Among years of collegiate rowing experience, only height and 2K times differed significantly. Further analysis revealed third year rowers were significantly shorter than fourth year rowers, and fourth year rowers had significantly faster 2K times compared to first year rowers. CONCLUSIONS The physical characteristics of rowers are not apparently affected by years of training at the collegiate level. Differences between novice and varsity rowers are small. It appears that total rowing experience (pre-collegiate and collegiate) is the most important factor affecting performance outcomes in 2K times." @default.
