- W4253143628 abstract "Big data is all the rage. A recent issue of the Foreign Affairs journal even trumpeted this on its cover, and books have recently been written simply entitled Big Data, usually with a subtitle. Big data is the ability to collate and process large amounts of data, thanks to the wonder of modern computers and databases, and to derive useful information from these data. It is coming to medicine as well, with national joint registries; and with the coming use of electronic medical records, Big Brother wants to be able to check everything we do and look for trends, not only to decrease the cost of medical care but also to improve medical care.So we are going to try to help, but it will require some assistance from our authors. Because the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (JSES) is published online as well as in hard copy, we have the ability to accept data in the online version that would not fit well into the paper copy. And we want more information—we want big data. To assist with future systematic reviews and meta-analyses, it is helpful to have full databases of all medical research projects, and from this date onward, we are requesting authors to provide us their databases of information for any clinical or basic science study that they do, listing all subjects studied and all pertinent data obtained during the study. If this is a small set of data, many authors do this now, and it has frequently been published in JSES. For larger sets of data, this has not been feasible, but we now are requesting it, as it can be published online as a Supplemental Appendix. Future researchers will then have access to this “Big Data” for use in any studies they may do, analyzing previous research—or as a good friend of mine terms it, “doing research on research.”At this time, these data are being requested. It is not mandatory but highly recommended that authors provide the data. At some time in the future, if this works well, it is likely that it will become mandatory for all JSES submissions.
