- W4253422931 abstract "The mate-guarding and copulation behaviour of monogamous and polyandrous dunnocks was investigated to determine how males ‘valued’ copulations achieved at various stages of the mating period. The intensity of mate guarding and the copulation rate did not vary through the mating period but males clearly detected when females were most fertile because: (1) chasing between males increased the day before egg laying began; and (2) although females usually started incubation on the day the last egg was laid, when they delayed the start of incubation for 1 day after clutch completion males guarded less intensely. Copulation rates increased with competition for matings, being highest in polyandry where two males gained equal mating access. Males were removed temporarily and then released to investigate experimentally how they valued copulations, using nestling provisioning as an assay of value. Males removed just before egg laying, and kept away throughout, did not provision the young even though they had enjoyed mating access for several days. By contrast, when a model egg was placed in the nest and males removed within 24 h of the laying of the first real egg, they did feed the young even though absent throughout egg laying. Thus the sight of an egg in the nest was a cue for valuing copulations. It was not the only cue, however, because a model egg did not stimulate chick feeding by males removed 2 or more days before real egg laying began. Thus female appearance or behaviour indicative of imminent laying was also important. The advantages of using a dual cue and the, factors influencing the onset and termination of mate guarding and copulation are discussed." @default.
