- W4253607609 abstract "This chapter describes heparin as a polysulfated mucopolysaccharide derived from the tissue mast cells of Ehrlich. It is like the hormones synthesized by specific kinds of cells characterized by pathologists of the past as einzellige Drüsen des Bindegewebes—unicellular glands of the connective tissue. Because of its extraordinarily strong anticoagulant activity, it is assumed to function as a physiological anticoagulant. The hormonal status of heparin is, however, less well-defined. It differs in several respects from the ordinary hormones. The mast cells, also called heparinocytes, are diffusely distributed in the body with an accumulation in some species in certain organs or tissues. The anticoagulant activity of heparin is claimed to vary widely with the species of animal from which it derives. It has also been questioned whether heparin is to be considered as a physiological anticoagulant. The chapter discusses that the mast cells came into prominence by the discovery of their heparin content. These cells are evidently the only source of heparin, which is stored as metachromatic granules. Mast cell tumors in the dogs are rich in heparin. However, heparin is not only stored but also synthesized by the mast cells." @default.
