- W4253873004 abstract "<abstract> <bold>Abstract.</bold> This study focuses on the drying characteristics of several perennial grasses that have been identified as potential bioenergy crops. Field and laboratory drying experiments were conducted on big bluestem, indiangrass, miscanthus, and switchgrass. Samples of each crop were harvested and placed on racks in the field. The mass of each was monitored throughout the day, along with air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. In a similar experiment, samples were dried in a laboratory controlled environment under constant temperature and air velocity. For all experiments, the drying data were fit to exponential curves to compare the drying kinetics. All four grasses had similar moisture losses over 6 hours of natural field drying. Initial moisture contents for big bluestem, indiangrass, miscanthus, and switchgrass were 65.8, 65.1, 60.3, and 59.8% (wet basis), respectively. The final moisture contents were 49.3, 48.6, 46.7, and 46.8%, respectively. The drying rate constants for big bluestem, indiangrass, miscanthus, and switchgrass were 0.098, 0.100, 0.087, and 0.079 grams of water per gram of dry solids, respectively. In contrast, during the laboratory drying experiments, the characteristics of switchgrass, big bluestem, and indiangrass were similar over 20 hours, but miscanthus did not dry as quickly. This was expected as miscanthus has a much thicker stalk that could impede the drying process. However, this difference was not noted in the 6 hour natural field drying experiment or in the first 6 hours of the laboratory controlled experiment. Part of this may be due to the early drying removing moisture close to the surface and greater differences in drying kinetics might be detected if the field drying period was longer." @default.
