- W4254186348 abstract "In the nineteenth century myth was typically seen as the primitive counterpart to science, which was deemed modern. Myth and science were mutually exclusive. Because, by definition, moderns had science, they could not consistently also have myth. The exemplars of this view were E. B. Tylor and J. G. Frazer. In the twentieth century, by contrast, myth was seen as almost anything but scientific-like. In either function or subject matter or both, myth was considered different from science. Because myth and science diverged, they were compatible. The exemplars of this view were Malinowski, Eliade, Bultmann, Jonas, Freud, and Jung. In the twenty-first century the goal has been to make myth not merely compatible with science but scientific itself. The most conspicuous example of this view of myth has been the Gaia hypothesis, as formulated by the scientist James Lovelock. Gaia is the ancient Greek name for the earth, which Lovelock argues is a deliberate, thinking agent -- in other words, a god, just as for ancient Greeks. The personification of the earth brings myth back to the physical world on scrupulously scientific grounds." @default.
