- W4254186373 abstract "This chapter discusses several antiprotozoal drugs and their adverse effects. Amodiaquine is a Mannich base derivative related to chloroquine. It may be an alternative first-line drug in the treatment of falciparum malaria in chloroquine-resistant areas. Chloroquine remains effective against most non-falciparum malaria, but owing to widespread resistance has limited efficacy in the management of P falciparum infections. Nevertheless, because of its low cost and wide availability it is still widely used in many countries. Amodiaquine and chloroquine have been compared in an open randomized trial in uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Nigerian children. Long-term chloroquine can cause cardiac complications, such as conduction disorders and cardiomyopathy (restrictive or hypertrophic), by structural alteration of the interventricular septum. Quinine remains effective against all Plasmodium species, and is the drug of choice for the management of severe malaria in most areas of the world, either alone or with other antimalarial drugs. Well-known adverse effects include nausea, tinnitus, dizziness, and hypoglycemia. Primaquine is active against the liver stages of Plasmodium species, which allows treatment of hypnozoites in vivax and ovale malaria to prevent recurrence. However, it should not be used in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency or during pregnancy, because of the risk of hemolysis." @default.
