- W4254195111 abstract "Traditionally, the first paragraphs of previous editorials for the meeting of the Spanish Association of Animal Reproduction (AERA) narrated its origin, goals and peer constitution; as initiated by members of the different units of Animal Reproduction and Obstetrics from the different Spanish Faculties of Veterinary Medicine, followed by fellows from Research Institutes and members of private companies joining the Society. I would like to claim the clinical nature of the discipline of Animal Reproduction. It is true that in the last 10–15 years a huge explosion in the sphere of reproductive biotechnology has occurred and, at present, several Spanish groups can be considered as world leaders in specific matters in the large field of animal reproduction. However, the clinical nature of our discipline persists and has a pivotal role in the training of our under- and post-graduates. This is one of the facts that we had in mind when defining the scientific programme of this year’s meeting for AERA, which is to be held between the 2nd and 5th of June 2010 at the Complejo Cultural San Francisco, Cáceres, Spain. Sadly, one of the persons who meant so much for such a concept and the initiation, development and strengthening of AERA, our own Past President and founder of AERA, Professor Miguel Abad Gavín, passed away last year (see the attached In memoriam). This meeting is dedicated to his memory, in particular the ‘Equine aspects of this meeting’, one of the species that he loved so much. To put together the meeting has not been easy, mainly because of the economic recession that has dramatically reduced the economic sponsorship upon which most scientific reunions depend on. However, this task has been thus far accomplished, thanks to you all. On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, I wish to thank the speakers in the main sessions and their co-authors, authors of the abstracts and oral communications, delegates, reviewers and the sponsors for their contribution towards organizing this scientific meeting. Special thanks to Prof Emilio Espinosa and Prof Emilio Martínez, President and Secretary of the board of AERA, as well as to the Editor-in-Chief of Reproduction in Domestic Animals, Professor Heriberto Rodriguez Martínez, for their active involvement in the organization of this event. I invite you all to attend this meeting and hope that this will be a good opportunity to share experiences and ideas and that after this meeting, numerous joint teaching and research activities will be initiated.
