- W4254218369 abstract "In 2001 Prensky introduced the terms “digital immigrant” and “digital native” drawing a distinction between contemporary students growing up in the digital age and those predating them. Early 21st century students represented the first generation of students to grow up with smart technology spending their lives surrounded by and using tools and toys of the contemporary digital age. As Prensky suggested, the difference is important because as a result of a continuous immersion in this environment contemporary students process and think in a fundamentally different way than their parents.Later Prensky introduced the term digital wisdom, which addresses the perspective of adaptability. However, the authors posit there is a portion of the population that is incapable or unwilling to adapt. The term digital wisdom applies to that population and requires the introduction of a new term to the digital lexicon, the digital Neanderthal. The digital Neanderthal is unable to, unwilling to, or incapable of digital emigration. Digital emigration is the act moving from one digital state to another. One who cannot, will not, or is incapable of digital emigration is a digital Neanderthal. Within the context of Prensky’s digital immigrant-digital native paradigm and distinction among the digital population, the authors postulate the population of digital Neanderthals has been neglected. In this essay the authors propose additional terms to expand the educator’s digital lexicon to include another class of learner – the digital Neanderthal and terms important for professional educators to consider including: digital concordance, digital discord, digital disruption, and digital dissonance. These terms are a result of members of each digital class not considering their learners. Unless instructors adapt to other classes and adopt learning theories amenable to the digital landscape they will be barriers to learning instead of facilitators." @default.
