- W4254297261 abstract "Verbal indexes to Ford Madox Ford's The Good Soldier and Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim, created by the computer programs of the Wisconsin Old Spanish Dictionary Project reveal that The Good Soldier contains nearly three times as many occurrences of the function word that as does the longer Lord Jim By analyzing the uses of the nominal complement that-clause, a semantically complex construct that is accessible to analysis using the work of Paul and Carol Kiparsky, Marc Rosenberg, and other linguistic theorists, I show that the predicates that introduce the nomianal complement that-clauses may be categorized into four semantic classes, defining four distinct worlds: (1) the factive verbs (such as know) indicated a fictive world of fact or potential fact, (2) the performative verbs (such as say) indicate a world of performance or action, (3) the verbs of propositional attitude (such as think) indicate a world of thought or belief, and (4) the world-creating verbs (such as imagine) indicate a world of fantasy or make-believe. This process of semantic analysis shows that the fictive world of The Good Soldier is a mental world which turns inward upon itself, isolating the narrative voice of Dowell inside that world, whereas the fictive world of Lord Jim is a performative world that turns outward, shutting out the narrative voice of. Marlow from that world. The analysis of the nominal complement that-clauses provides a new way of interpreting the novels." @default.
