- W4254313347 abstract "This chapter discusses keratin dependent skin fragility syndromes assessed in the context of intermediate filament proteins. Keratins consist of two groups, type I and type II, as suggested from studies on sheep wool keratins. Defined and specific type I–type II pairs of keratins are co-expressed in different epithelial cells, to give an overall keratin expression profile in an epithelium that is specific for its state of differentiation. The significance of two groups of keratins is that these intermediate filaments are obligatory heteroplymers and they have to form type I–type II heterodimers at the first stage of assembly. Single, undimerized keratins of either type are rapidly degraded in the cytoplasm. This feature has been used to study mechanisms of filament assembly in cultured cells. Although there is partial dependence on copolymerization in neurofilaments, among the intermediate filaments only keratins are exclusively heteropolymeric." @default.
