- W4254329239 abstract "Atopic dermatitis can present in dogs and cats worldwide, though geographic differences may play a role in the development of disease, as well as prevalence in that region. The hallmark of atopic dermatitis in both dogs and cats is pruritus, which will often be reported as mild at first but progresses to become more moderate to severe as the disease advances. The distribution pattern of lesions and pruritus is most helpful when considering atopic dermatitis. The diagnosis of atopic dermatitis is based on a consistent and fitting history, clinical signs, and exclusion of all other pruritic dermatoses. Therapy falls into two categories: medical and allergen-specific immunotherapy. Medical therapies aim to primarily address the pruritus and discomfort associated with atopic dermatitis, whereas allergen-specific immunotherapy attempts to retrain the immune system. Glucocorticoids have historically been touted as a mainstay therapy for atopic dermatitis in dogs and cats." @default.
