- W4254329574 abstract "The contemporary sonnet's varied structures of argument and music of architecture are illustrated from poems by Don Paterson and Anne Stevenson. The immediate literary background is discussed—the sonnet ignored or deplored by Modernists in Britain and the United States but revived by W. H. Auden and by American poets (John Berryman, Robert Lowell, Ted Berrigan) in ways that influenced post-1960s British and Irish writers. The major sequences by Geoffrey Hill, Seamus Heaney, Tony Harrison, and Paul Muldoon are considered, with their characteristic qualities and ways of handling the form, often breaking down traditional regularities with new directions with new disciplines. Other poets who used the form are briefly identified, with an alternative tradition (“Reality Street”) based more in the freedoms of Berrigan than of Lowell. Recent poets who have experimented with the form in new ways are represented by Ciaran Carson and Alice Oswald. Overall, the developments show the form retaining its historic contact with conscious art and high rhetorical modes alongside new forms that capture the evanescent moment in a style that is more democratic-demotic." @default.
