- W4254591472 abstract "Bipedalism, or locomotion on two legs, is one of several characteristics of humans that is unique among the primates. Human walking is quite different from other forms of bipedalism in the animal kingdom and is dependent on distinct anatomical traits, such as the shape of the pelvis and the lower limbs. Anthropologists have been drawn to various plausible scenarios for its evolution, including freeing the hands (e.g., for carrying food or weapons), postural feeding, vertical climbing, thermoregulation, threat displays, locomotor efficiency, and wading through water. Central to understanding this phenomenon is the need to ascertain when bipedalism began in the great ape clade: whether it preceded the last common ancestor of Pan and Homo and hence whether we uniquely gained it (or chimpanzees lost it) and how similar the earliest forms of bipedalism were to our own, today." @default.
