- W4254656661 abstract "Abstract1. Available evidence based on free-flow micropuncture of cortical and juxtamedullary nephrons indicates that with respect to the transport of sodium and phosphate ions, these nephron populations show significant differences. 2. From a careful comparison of late distal with collecting tubule delivery of sodium ions during extracellular volume expansion it may be concluded that juxtamedullary nephrons deliver a larger fraction of sodium into the urine. This is abolished by renal papillary necrosis. 3. With respect to phosphate ions, studies in states of either diminished or increased urinary phosphate excretion also show marked differences between cortical and juxtamedullary nephrons. 4. Juxtamedullary nephrons contribute a larger fraction of phosphate during phosphate loading. whereas they conserve phosphate more avidly in the thyroparathyroidectomized state. 5. Potassium ions are extensively reabsorbed along the proximal tubule and Henle's loop of superficial nephrons, and it is potassium secretion along the distal tubule and the collecting ducts that contributes the largest fraction to urinary potassium excretion. 6. Recent evidence has demonstrated potassium recirculation between collecting ducts and the descending limb of Henle's loop, i.e. potassium secretion into juxtamedullary nephrons prior to the distal tubule. 7. It is not clear whether such potassium contributes importantly to urinary excretion, but some evidence indicated that juxtamedullary nephrons are not necessary for apparent potassium secretion downstream of the late distal tubule of cortical nephrons." @default.
