This chapter describes the classical nucleation theory in more detail on the basis of the thermodynamics. It overviews field and laboratory studies, focusing on atmospheric new particle formation, in which sulfuric acid, water vapor, and other species such as ammonia, organic amine, and oxygenated organics are involved. The chapter considers the effects of aerosol chemical compositions on the growth of cloud condensation nuclei (CNN) into cloud droplets on the basis of the Kohler theory. The activation of CCN is affected by the curvature effect of a particle (droplet) as well as by the ability of a particle to take up water vapor, or hygroscopicity. The discussion of particle hygroscopicity based on the Kohler equation requires physical parameters including molar mass and density of solutes as well as the information on water activity of the solution." @default.
