Thus, any call for the emancipation of women ensnares us in the paradox of identity and freedom. To get out of the paradox we need to change the terms: if we understand the identity of women as constituted through multiple and conflicting historical and political relations, we can understand our agency to be enabled not only by relations of power but also by other kinds of relations, and not only by the dominant norms that enable as they constrain, but also by norms that contest: norms of alternative and resistant and marginalized cultures and communities. Drawing on Linda Zerilli's argument for a political re-creation of women through practices of freedom, but criticizing the opposition between freedom and identity that persists in Zerilli's formulation, I argue for an understanding of practices of identification as practices of freedom directed toward a community or place where one can belong." @default.
