The results are valid for a surface reaction (adsorbed species, Langmuir isotherm, or monolayer-modified electrode), or for a heterogeneous electrochemical reaction with protonations occurring in solution near the electrode. If the transfer coefficients of the individual electrochemical reactions are equal to 0.5, the reaction behaves as a single monoelectronic process, whose apparent rate constant k e app depends on the pH. W-shaped, boatshaped or V-shaped graphs, whose slopes are generally±0.5, are obtained for the variations of log k e app =f(pH). The results, and more particularly the reaction paths and the sequence of the protonations and of the electrochemical reactions, are analysed in detail." @default.
