Encompassing a wide array of climates, confessions, and nations, as well as various social and economic structures, it came into contact, in its six centuries‐long existence (1299–1922), with different polities, ranging from medieval kingdoms to the colonialist empires of the nineteenth century. Its major achievement was the formation of a sustainable administration, through successful negotiations, over a vast territory covering autonomous enclaves, vassal states, and client‐principalities.
